Appleby fires 59 to take Greenbrier
[August 04]

Stuart Appleby produced the round of his life to snatch the Greenbrier Classic by a single shot at White Sulphar Springs.

Appleby carded only the fifth round of 59 in PGA Tour history as he came from seventh position to deny overnight leader Jeff Overton by just one stroke at the West Virginia course.

The Australian had six birdies on the front nine to reach the turn in 28 and an eagle three at the par-five 12th saw him draw level with Overton at the top of the leaderboard.

Although Overton reclaimed the lead with a birdie at the 11th, Appleby drew level with his seventh birdie of the day at the 16th before he sealed victory with back-to-back birdies at the final two holes.

His 11-under-par 59 brought him to 22-under for the tournament, one clear of Overton, who shot a three-under 67.

"I felt like I've played this well before," the Australian said. "Have I putted as well? Probably not. Today was a purple patch. By no means do I do this all the time. I had a lot of opportunities, and I made them.

"It is great to do that to win a tournament. Not that that was the last hole (of the tournament), but to do that and cap off a low number was very unique."

Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge carded a final round 65 to move to 17-under and third place on his own, while Woody Austin, Paul Stankowski, Roger Tambellini, Jimmy Walker and DA Points all ended the tournament on 15-under-par.
